How to actually use a past paper
Downloading papers is not studying. The gain comes from writing one under exam conditions, then marking it honestly against the memo.
Give yourself the real time limit and no notes. Mark it yourself, awarding the marks the marker would rather than the ones you meant to earn. Then list the questions you lost marks on and find the topic behind each. That list is your revision plan, and it is worth more than the next three papers you download.
Work backwards from the most recent sitting. Papers written in the last three years reflect the current examiners and the way they ask things.

Where can I download past papers for free?
Here. Every paper on this site was set by the Department of Basic Education or a provincial education department, and all of them are free. There is no sign up, no waiting page and no limit on how many you take.
Where can I get matric past papers and memos?
On the Grade 12 page. It has the matric question papers and memos for every subject we hold: the November finals, the May/June exams and the September trials, which some schools call prelims. Some people call them exam papers or previous question papers. They are the same thing.
Do you have Term 3 and Term 4 past papers?
Yes. Term 1 papers are listed under March, Term 2 under June, Term 3 under September and Term 4 under November. Each paper shows both the month and the term, for Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Do I need to sign up or pay?
No. Click the paper and it downloads. We do not ask for an email address and there is nothing to buy.
Do the papers come with memos?
Yes, where the department published one. The memo sits on the same row as its paper, so you download the two together.
Which grades and subjects are there?
Mostly Grades 10, 11 and 12, with some papers for the lower grades. The subjects include Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Geography, History, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics and the languages, and more are added as we find them. Each grade page lists the subjects it has.
Where do the papers come from?
Every paper was set by the Department of Basic Education or a provincial education department. Where a department puts its papers online, we take them from the department. Where it does not, we find the paper elsewhere and check it against its cover before we add it. The questions and the memo are never changed.
Can I use a paper from another province?
Yes. Every province writes the same CAPS curriculum, so a Gauteng or Eastern Cape paper is good practice wherever you are. Only the grade 12 November finals are national, written by everyone.
How many past papers should I do?
Fewer, properly, beats many skimmed. One paper written under time and marked honestly against the memo teaches you more than five you read through. Start with the most recent sitting and work backwards.
