How does UJ calculate my APS?

Accepted Answer

UJ uses the standard 42-point APS scale. It takes your best 6 subjects, excludes Life Orientation, converts each result to points from 1 to 7, and adds the total. That makes UJ much easier to compare with universities like UP, NWU, and UFS than with UCT or Wits.

What APS do I need for popular courses at UJ?

Indicative minimums at UJ are around 33 for BCom Accounting, about 30 for BSc IT, around 30 for BA Law, about 25 for Diploma in Accountancy, around 26 for Engineering diplomas, and roughly 28 for Education. Campus and subject requirements can still shift the real admission level.

Does UJ require the NBT?

No. UJ does not normally require National Benchmark Tests for undergraduate admission. Selection is based on your APS and the subject minimums for the programme you want. That can make the application process more straightforward than at universities that require extra testing.

UJ runs across APK, APB, Doornfontein, and Soweto campuses, and not every programme is available at every campus. The APS rules stay broadly consistent, but the programme offering and availability can change by campus. Always check the UJ prospectus for the exact campus linked to your course.

Does UJ accept Maths Literacy?

Accepted Answer

UJ accepts Maths Literacy for many programmes, including several BA, BEd, tourism, hospitality, and diploma options. It does not work for BSc, Engineering, BCom Accounting, or IT routes that require stronger quantitative preparation. UJ is more flexible than some traditional research universities, but limits still apply.

UJ applications usually open in April and close on 31 October. The application fee is usually R200. Even with the later deadline, it still helps to apply early because UJ receives a very high number of applications and some programmes can effectively fill before the closing date.
