Frequently asked questions

Does NSFAS fund private colleges?

No. NSFAS only funds public universities and public TVET colleges. For private colleges you'd typically look at Fundi (specialist student finance), bank student loans or the college's own internal bursaries.

Can I apply for more than one bursary?

Yes, and you should. Corporate bursaries often exclude applicants who already hold another funding package, but you can apply to several and choose the best offer. NSFAS can stack with many private bursaries that cover the same year.

What happens if I miss a bursary deadline?

Most bursaries don't consider late applications. Your backup routes are next-cycle reapplication, NSFAS (if you're still inside the window), Fundi or bank student loans, SETA learnerships, or starting at a TVET while you reapply. Don't stop applying, the SA bursary landscape is wide.

What about SETA bursaries?

Each of the 21 SETAs runs its own bursary, learnership and apprenticeship programmes aligned to its sector (banking, mining, manufacturing, ICT and so on). See our SETAs directory for contact details and portal links per sector.
