What does my university application status mean?
Universities word it differently, but nearly every status falls into one of five groups.
- Provisional or conditional offer. You are in, based on your Grade 11 or mid-year marks, as long as your final results meet the conditions listed. This is the normal outcome before matric results come out.
- Firm or final offer. Your final results have been checked and the place is yours. You still have to accept it and register by their deadline or you lose it.
- Waitlisted, reserve or pending space. You meet the requirements but the programme is full. Keep applying elsewhere while you wait.
- Application without status, incomplete or under assessment. Usually nothing has been decided yet, often because a document or payment is missing. Check your document checklist first, then contact admissions.
- Unsuccessful or declined. Not accepted for that programme. You can often still be considered for a different one at the same university, and other routes stay open.
A status can change more than once, especially in January when final matric results are loaded, so check again after results day.
