What it costs and how to pay

The first degree costs about R40,000 to R70,000 a year at a university. Honours and Master's cost more and are harder to fund. Plan for a long study path of about seven years.

The first degree is the easy part to fund. Honours and Master's are harder, because NSFAS mostly pays for your first degree only.

NSFAS

NSFAS pays for your first degree (fees, room, and living money) at a public university, if your family earns under R350,000 a year. It does not usually pay for Honours or Master's.
