How to Apply
I know these online portals can feel like a nightmare when the site is slow, but take it one step at a time. Apply for UNIZULU through the Central Applications Office (CAO) at cao.ac.za, since KwaZulu-Natal universities share one application system. The CAO application costs R250, and this covers all your KZN university choices in one go.
Applications for 2027 open on 1 March 2026 and close on 31 October 2026. Have your certified ID copy, Grade 11 final results, and Grade 12 results ready before you start. If you've already matriculated, use your final NSC or NCV results instead, plus proof of payment. List up to six programme choices in order of preference so you don't miss out if your first pick is full.

Know what you're applying for
Before you apply, work out what you're interested in studying and check whether you meet the entry requirements — it decides which programmes are worth putting on your application.
Documents you'll need
- Certified copy of your ID or passport
- Certified copy of your latest results (Grade 11 or matric, whichever you have)
- Academic transcript — only if you're a transfer student from another institution
- SAQA evaluation — only if you did your schooling outside South Africa
- Proof of residence — only if you're applying for a res spot
Don't forget NSFAS
NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) is a separate application from your university application, with its own closing date. Applying to University of Zululand does not apply you for NSFAS — you need to do both.

Enter up to six programmes across the participating KZN universities.

Submit your ID and Grade 11 results through the CAO portal.

Pay the CAO administration fee
Budget about R250 so your choices can be processed.
After you apply
Once your CAO form is in, keep checking for updates from both CAO and the universities you chose.
You may get updates from CAO first, then direct messages from the university. Some offers are conditional until your final results are released.
Accept your preferred offer as soon as the portal allows it, then complete housing, funding, and registration steps with that university.
