What You Need to Know About University of Zululand
UNIZULU sits in KwaDlangezwa, KwaZulu-Natal, running both rural and urban campuses. It's a comprehensive university, meaning you can study everything from diplomas to full engineering degrees on one campus. Entry points are lower than at many bigger universities, so if your matric marks aren't sky high, you still have real options here.
It's not the flashiest name on your list, but its Engineering, Education, and Nursing programmes pull in solid demand every year. If you want Engineering or Nursing, be ready to bring your Maths and Science marks up. If you're aiming for something like the Higher Certificate in Accountancy, the entry bar sits much lower.
What APS Do You Need?
UNIZULU uses its own APS system: best 6 subjects on an 8-point scale, Life Orientation excluded, for a maximum of 48 points. Certificates and diplomas like the Higher Certificate in Accountancy start from 22 APS, and Diploma in Transport Management needs 24 APS. Diplomas like Hospitality Management and Sport & Exercise Technology, plus Education degrees, sit at 26 APS.
Science and Consumer Science degrees want 28 APS, while Engineering and Nursing Science are the toughest at 30 APS with strong Maths and Physical Science marks. If you're leaning on Maths Lit instead of Maths, some science and engineering routes will be closed off to you. Check the subject requirements for each programme before you decide.
Fees and Funding
Money stress is real, and UNIZULU doesn't make it worse on the registration side. UNIZULU's Vice-Chancellor has confirmed you won't pay a separate registration fee. For exact tuition costs per module, check the official University of Zululand fees page for exact details.
NSFAS can cover your fees if you meet the financial eligibility criteria. Apply through myNSFAS as soon as applications open, and get your supporting documents ready early so you're not scrambling near the closing date.
