What You Need to Know About University of Venda
Univen sits in Thohoyandou, right in the heart of Limpopo. It’s known for being grounded, practical, and welcoming to first-gen university students. If you want a real shot at a degree without the Joburg or Cape Town price tag, Univen is a solid option.
You’ll find strong programs in law, education, health, and agriculture. The entry requirements aren’t impossible, but you do need to be focused. Getting in isn’t about fancy connections, it’s about the marks in your matric statement and the subjects you chose.
What APS Do You Need?
Most BA degrees at Univen need at least 30 APS, and you’ll need an adequate achievement (usually 50-59%) in English or African Languages. Law is a bit tougher, needing 38 APS with a minimum of 60% in English. If you’re looking at Criminal Justice, you’ll need 34 APS plus at least 50% in English.
For the science side, the Extended BSc in Computer Science and Mathematics needs 26 APS with a bachelor’s pass, and you must have at least 40-49% in Maths, English, Physical Sciences, and another relevant subject. If you went with Maths Lit, your options are limited, so check closely before applying.
How to Apply
I know the online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step. You apply online at https://www.univen.ac.za/, and you’ll need to create a 5-digit pin, upload your ID, your latest marks (Grade 11 or Matric certificate), and hit submit. You’ll get a student number after applying, so keep that safe for everything else you need to do.
There’s a non-refundable application fee of R100. The closing date for 2027 studies is 26 September 2025. That’s your hard deadline. You can only apply online, so make sure you have data and your documents sorted before you start.
Fees and Funding
Actual course fees at Univen vary, but you’re looking at anything from R2,130 to around R9,480 per module for some courses. Fees must be paid upfront, so it’s not something you can sort out at the last minute. NSFAS is available and covers tuition, res, and allowances if you qualify. There are also internal bursaries and merit awards for top marks—if you get three or more distinctions, you could get extra support.
Life on Campus
Res life at Univen is in high demand, so apply early for accommodation. You fill in the res form when you do your main application. The campus is active and you’ll find people from all over Limpopo and beyond. If you’re coming from far, make sure you budget for travel and keep an eye on res placement emails.
