How to Apply
I know CAO applications can feel like a maze, but you don't need to panic if you take it one step at a time. Apply through the Central Applications Office at www.cao.ac.za, since MUT doesn't take first-year applications directly through its own site. One CAO form lets you list up to six programmes across participating universities and universities of technology.
The current application window runs from 1 January 2026 to 30 September 2026 for 2027 intake. Have your ID copy and certified matric results ready before you start. Check the official MUT page for exact application fee details, since figures floating around online don't agree. MUT sometimes opens late applications after the main deadline closes, so keep checking the CAO site if you miss it.

Know what you're applying for
Before you apply, work out what you're interested in studying and check whether you meet the entry requirements — it decides which programmes are worth putting on your application.
Documents you'll need
- Certified copy of your ID or passport
- Certified copy of your latest results (Grade 11 or matric, whichever you have)
- Academic transcript — only if you're a transfer student from another institution
- SAQA evaluation — only if you did your schooling outside South Africa
- Proof of residence — only if you're applying for a res spot
Don't forget NSFAS
NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) is a separate application from your university application, with its own closing date. Applying to Mangosuthu University of Technology does not apply you for NSFAS — you need to do both.

Start at cao.ac.za and create your applicant profile.

Complete one CAO form for all your choices
Enter up to six programmes across the participating KZN universities.

Upload your certified documents
Submit your ID and Grade 11 results through the CAO portal.

Pay the CAO administration fee
Budget about R250 so your choices can be processed.
After you apply
Once your CAO form is in, keep checking for updates from both CAO and the universities you chose.
You may get updates from CAO first, then direct messages from the university. Some offers are conditional until your final results are released.
Accept your preferred offer as soon as the portal allows it, then complete housing, funding, and registration steps with that university.
