What You Need to Know About Mangosuthu University of Technology

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) sits in Umlazi, Durban, and has a solid rep for hands-on, technical courses that set you up for real work. It’s best known for engineering, health sciences, and management programs that lead straight to jobs, especially if you’re into practical problem-solving. MUT isn’t the easiest university to get into, but it’s not out of reach if you have decent marks and meet the right subject requirements.

You’ll find a lot of students from all over KZN and beyond, many of them looking for affordable, career-focused study. MUT keeps its tuition and res fees on the lower side compared to some other varsities, which helps if you’re stressing about money. The vibe is practical and community-driven, with a focus on helping you get ready for a real job.

What APS Do You Need?

Most MUT programs look at your best five subjects to work out your APS. For most diplomas, you’ll need at least 25 APS and passes in English, Maths, and Science at 50% or Level 4. If you want to get into Engineering or Health Sciences, you can’t use Maths Lit—only pure Maths counts. Some departments also have their own entrance tests or extra screening, so it’s not just about the points.

For the Faculty of Management Sciences, you’ll need 25 APS with at least 50% in English, Maths, and Accounting. Engineering asks for the same APS but needs 50% in English, Maths, and Physics. For Applied and Health Sciences, it’s 25 APS with 50% in English, Maths, Physical Science, Agricultural Science, or Life Sciences. Life Orientation doesn’t count towards your APS here.

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees at MUT are actually pretty affordable, ranging from R4,530 to R15,350 per semester depending on your course. Res fees go from R4,120 to R11,150 per semester. That doesn’t include meals, transport, or textbooks, so budget for extras. NSFAS covers tuition and res if you qualify, and there are some bursaries and scholarships on the MUT site.

If you’re worried about funding, apply for NSFAS early and check out MUT’s bursaries page. It’s safer to have more than one funding option lined up before you arrive.

Life on Campus

Accommodation is available on campus with res fees between R4,120 and R11,150 per semester. There are student support services, campus health, and loads of societies to join if you want to make friends or need help. The campus is in Umlazi, so public transport like taxis and buses are easy to catch if you’re commuting.
