What You Need to Know About Vaal University of Technology
VUT sits in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, and it runs practical, career focused diplomas and degrees across four faculties: Human Sciences, Management Sciences, Engineering and Technology, and Applied and Computer Sciences. It is not the university you pick for bragging rights, it is the one you pick when you want a qualification that gets you into a job. If your matric marks are not sky high but you still want a real, respected qualification, VUT is worth a serious look.
Entry points here are lower than at traditional universities, with some diplomas open to students with as little as 20 APS. Other programmes, like the engineering diplomas, ask for more. Either way, VUT is built around getting you workplace ready, not just handing you a certificate.
What APS Do You Need?
VUT uses the best 6 subjects on an 8 point ladder, and Life Orientation does not count towards your total. The maximum score on this system is 48. Different faculties want different numbers, and your subject marks matter as much as the total.
Diplomas in Human Resources Management and Logistics and Supply Chain Management ask for 20 APS if you took Maths, or 21 APS if you took Maths Lit, with English at level 4. Food Service Management follows the same pattern, 20 APS with Maths or 21 APS with Maths Lit. The Fashion, Photography, Graphic Design and Fine Art diplomas need 21 APS with Maths or 22 APS with Maths Lit, and your matric certificate needs to show admission to Diploma studies. Engineering diplomas sit higher, at 24 APS, with a minimum of level 4 (50-59%) required in Maths, Physical Science and English specifically.
Fees and Funding
Money stress is real, so let's break down what is actually confirmed. The national student registration fee is R2,500, and your total tuition depends on which programme you choose, so check the official VUT fees page for the full breakdown. VUT also gets support from BANKSETA for qualifying graduates who are stuck with historical student debt, which is worth looking into if that applies to you.
NSFAS covers tuition, accommodation and book allowances if you meet the requirements, including a household income under R350,000 a year, and you need to reapply every year to stay funded. NSFAS does not cover things like historic debt, library fines or re-exam fees, and if you get accommodation funding you become ineligible for the transport allowance. Keep your NSFAS documents accurate and submitted on time, since VUT has had real delays processing funding in past cycles.
Life on Campus
Residence applications close on 31 October 2026, a bit later than the academic application deadline, so do not leave your housing sorted until the last minute. On campus housing tends to work out cheaper than private accommodation nearby. If you are relying on NSFAS for your residence funding, submit one verified lease agreement rather than multiple, since VUT and NSFAS no longer accept several leases from different landlords for the same student.
