NSFAS funding

University of Johannesburg is a public university, so NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) funding applies if you qualify financially. NSFAS is a bursary, not a loan, for students who qualify — you don't pay it back. It can cover tuition, res or a living allowance, meals, books, and a personal allowance.

NSFAS is a separate application from your university application, with its own closing date — applying to University of Johannesburg doesn't apply you for NSFAS.

The "missing middle"

If your household earns between R350,000 and R600,000 a year, you likely won't qualify for NSFAS but may still struggle to afford fees — this is called the "missing middle." NSFAS runs a loan scheme for this group: it's interest-free while you study, and repayment only starts 12 months after you leave the university.

Fees & funding

UJ does not charge a first-year application fee. Use that breathing room to sort out NSFAS, bursaries, and your registration budget early.

NSFAS doesn't cover everything — transport and personal items are usually still on you, even if you qualify for full funding.
