What You Need to Know About University of Fort Hare

Fort Hare is famous for producing some of SA’s biggest political and community leaders. If you’re looking for a real Eastern Cape varsity with serious history, this is the spot. It’s a solid choice if your marks are decent but not sky-high. Getting in isn’t impossible, but you still need to meet the minimum requirements.

The main campus is in Alice, but you’ll also find UFH in East London and Bhisho. Life here is rooted in rural and small-town vibes, and you’ll find a lot of support for students from local communities. It’s not about flashy buildings, but about getting your degree and making an impact back home.

What APS Do You Need?

For most Bachelor programs at Fort Hare, you need at least 26 APS. Make sure you have at least 50% for English (either as Home Language or First Additional Language). You also need 50% or higher in four other subjects, plus at least 30% in one subject. Life Orientation needs to be at least 50%. Some faculties might want even higher marks or extra requirements, so check your program’s specific details. If you’re taking Maths Lit, double-check if your dream degree accepts it—some don’t.

How to Apply

I know the online portal can be confusing, but just take it step-by-step and you’ll get through. Apply online at https://ienabler.ufh.ac.za/pls/prodi41/w99pkg.mi_login. The application fee is R120 and you pay it through PayGate during the process. Have your email, proof of payment, certified ID, and your NSC or latest Grade 12 results ready as separate PDFs. If you’re under 18, you’ll need a signed guardian consent form too.

Applications for undergrad programs open on 12 May 2025 and close on 31 October 2025. Don’t wait till the last minute—get your docs in early so you can sort out any issues.

Fees and Funding

It’s no secret that varsity costs real money. The application fee is R120, but tuition and res costs depend on your course and whether you stay on campus. UFH is NSFAS-friendly, so if your family’s annual income is below R350,000, you should definitely apply for NSFAS. There are also other bursaries like Funza Lushaka if you’re going into teaching. Check the official UFH fees page for the latest breakdowns.

Life on Campus

You’ll find on-campus residences in Alice, East London, and Bhisho. There’s a mix of private and university accommodation, but spots can fill up fast. UFH isn’t fancy, but you’ll get the basics—think study spaces, support from staff, and a community environment. If you want more details like res costs or how to apply for a room, check the official UFH accommodation page.
