What You Need to Know About North West University
NWU sits across three campuses in Mahikeng, Potchefstroom, and Vanderbijlpark. It’s known for making quality degrees accessible, especially if you’re not sitting on a crazy-high APS. You’ll find solid accounting, engineering, science, and education programs. If you want a university that gets real about balancing theory and practical skills, NWU is a good bet.
The vibe depends on campus. Potch is big on sports and engineering, Mahikeng is strong on health and law, and Vanderbijlpark leans into business and education. There’s a big focus on getting you ready for actual work, not just passing exams.
What APS Do You Need?
For most BCom degrees like Accounting, you need at least 24 APS with 40% for Maths and 50% for English. If you’re aiming for Chartered Accountancy, bump that up to 32 APS and make sure your Maths is at least 60%. The extended program drops the APS to 28, but it takes longer to finish.
Engineering is strict. You need at least 31 APS with 70% for Maths, 70% for Physical Sciences, and 60% for the language of instruction. Diplomas like Animal Health and Plant Science are more chill, sitting at 22 APS with English, Maths, and Science at level 3 or 4. Watch out: Maths Lit closes doors for most science and business degrees. Always check if your chosen course accepts Maths Lit or wants pure Maths.
How to Apply
I know the online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step. Apply at https://studies.nwu.ac.za/studies/apply. Have your ID, latest school results, and proof of payment for the R600 application fee ready. You can pick a campus and program in the same form.
The closing date for most courses is 30 September 2025. Residence applications open with your course application. No walk-ins for first-years, so do it all online if you can. If your data is tight, try use free WiFi at a library or youth centre.
Fees and Funding
For 2027, fees depend on your course and campus. If you’re staying in res, your first payment is at least R24,175. If you live off-campus, it’s R12,855. NSFAS covers fees for qualifying students and you don’t need to pay the first payment upfront if you’re funded. There are other NWU bursaries and support, but for exact figures, check the Student Finance page or ask the finance office.
Life on Campus
Each campus has its own res options and you can apply when you fill in your main application. Mahikeng, Potchefstroom, and Vanderbijlpark all have on-campus residences. Res fees range from R33,920 to R55,080 depending on campus. There’s also bus transport for students living in off-campus residences.
If you want to get involved, there are societies and clubs, but it’s not all about parties. Most people balance classes, work, and social life. Safety is taken seriously, especially at night, so stay alert. Not sure if your marks are enough? Use our free APS calculator to check where you stand.
