How to Apply
I know the online portal can be confusing, but just take it step-by-step. You need to apply online at https://www.mandela.ac.za/study-at-mandela/application/apply-undergraduate. The early application deadline for 2027 is 3 August 2026, and the final cut-off for late applications is 30 September 2026. International students and anyone wanting res must also apply by 30 September 2026.
Upload your ID, latest results, and any other documents as soon as you start your application. There are specific supporting docs per course, so check the list for your program. No walk-in applications are mentioned, so stick to the online process.

NMU is free to apply to, but some Health Sciences deadlines close earlier than the main August date.

Know what you're applying for
Before you apply, work out what you're interested in studying and check whether you meet the entry requirements — it decides which programmes are worth putting on your application.
Documents you'll need
- Certified copy of your ID or passport
- Certified copy of your latest results (Grade 11 or matric, whichever you have)
- Academic transcript — only if you're a transfer student from another institution
- SAQA evaluation — only if you did your schooling outside South Africa
- Proof of residence — only if you're applying for a res spot
Don't forget NSFAS
NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) is a separate application from your university application, with its own closing date. Applying to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University does not apply you for NSFAS — you need to do both.

Go to the Nelson Mandela University application page
Start at mandela.ac.za and open the online application.

Complete the form carefully
Enter your personal details and Grade 11 marks exactly as they appear on your report.

Upload your certified documents
Include your ID and your final Grade 11 report.

Submit before the deadline
Most programmes close on 3 August 2026, while some Health Sciences options close on 30 June 2026.
After you apply
NMU gives you a student number and PIN early, so use those details often instead of waiting for an email only.
NMU can update your status in stages while it checks documents and final results. Some offers stay conditional until January.
Respond to any conditional offer on the portal, and be ready to submit final Matric results if NMU asks for them after release.
