A paramedic gives emergency medical care to people who are hurt or very sick, often at accidents and in ambulances. In South Africa the old short courses were stopped, so now you study a real qualification: a one-year Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care, or a four-year Bachelor's degree. You then register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). You need matric with Maths and Science, and you must be fit.
