How does UFS calculate APS?

UFS scores six academic subjects on an 8 point ladder, where 90% or more is worth 8 rather than 7, for a core score out of 48. Life Orientation sits outside that six, but adds 1 point when it reaches Level 5 (60%), taking the maximum to 49 APS. Nothing below 30% scores at all, and English is compulsory on most programmes.

Faculty cutoffs still apply. Medicine and Actuarial Sciences typically need mid-to-high 30s plus strong Maths and Physical Sciences.

Does UFS include Life Orientation in APS?

Partially. Life Orientation adds exactly 1 point from 60% (Level 5), however high the mark.

  1. Convert your six academic subjects on the 8 point ladder, scoring nothing below 30%.
  2. Add exactly 1 point for Life Orientation if you got 60% or more.
  3. Check the programme requirements because the LO bonus never replaces a missing subject minimum.

About UFS

UFS sits right in Bloemfontein and is a proper go-to for anyone in the Free State or even from other provinces. It’s not as hard to get into as the big coastal varsities, but you still need decent marks.

Campus and residence

UFS has res on campus and some accredited off-campus options for when res is full. On-campus spots go fast, so apply early if you want a place. Private accommodation is an option, but you’ll need to handle your own lease and payments.

UFS scores six academic subjects on an 8 point ladder where 90% or more scores 8, then adds exactly 1 point for Life Orientation if you got 60% or more. The maximum is 49. Nothing below 30% scores at all. UFS works an example through in its own prospectus: five subjects at level 5 gives 25, one more at level 4 gives 4, and the Life Orientation point makes 30.

Important Disclaimer

This APS calculator is for information only. We aim to be accurate based on public university requirements, but admission decisions are made by each university and may consider factors beyond APS scores.

We do not guarantee admission based on our calculations. Requirements may change, and universities may consider additional criteria such as:

  • Portfolio submissions, interviews, or entrance tests
  • Specific subject requirements and combinations
  • Language proficiency requirements
  • Availability of spaces in programs

Always verify admission requirements directly with the universities you're applying to. Use this tool as a starting point, not a definitive guide for applications.

Where we show how your APS compares to other students, those marks are typed in by students themselves and are not verified. The comparison covers people who used this calculator, not every matric learner in South Africa, so it shows you what is normal here rather than a national ranking.
