What You Need to Know About University of the Free State
UFS sits right in Bloemfontein and is a proper go-to for anyone in the Free State or even from other provinces. It’s not as hard to get into as the big coastal varsities, but you still need decent marks. Here, you’ll find everything from business to science and teaching, with some competitive health and science streams. If you’re after practical degrees and want to stay in central SA, UFS is definitely worth a look.
The campus is busy with students from all over the country, so you’ll bump into a mix of languages and backgrounds. People know UFS for its solid teaching program, strong admin and business degrees, and a chilled but serious study vibe. It’s a place where you can actually get support if you need it, not just be a number.
What APS Do You Need?
Most degrees at UFS want at least 28 APS, but some like Actuarial Science and Physiotherapy go up to 33 or 34 APS. For BCom, you’ll need at least 28 APS with 50% for Maths. If you’re looking at science or health degrees, you need strong marks for specific subjects like Maths, Life Sciences, or Physical Sciences—often 60% or more. Maths Lit closes the door on a lot of these options, especially anything in commerce, science, or health.
The more competitive the degree, the higher the APS and subject marks. Always double-check if your subjects match what they want, not just your overall score. Some programmes also have selection tests or interviews, especially in health sciences.
How to Apply
I know the online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step. Apply at https://www.ufs.ac.za/ and make sure you have a working email, your final Grade 11 or current matric results, and a certified copy of your ID. The application fee is R240 for 2027.
Applications for most courses open on 1 April 2026 and close whenever the programme is full, so do it early. Some health and postgraduate programmes have different deadlines, so always check your specific course.
Fees and Funding
Varsity costs real money, and UFS is no different. The exact amount changes by course, so check their official site for the latest tuition fees. NSFAS can cover your fees if your family can’t afford it, but you need to apply early and upload all their documents. There are some other bursaries for top marks or specific fields, but NSFAS is the main one most people use.
Don’t forget about textbooks, transport, and living costs—these add up. If you score a bursary or NSFAS, let your sponsor know about UFS fee rules before you register.
Life on Campus
UFS has res on campus and some accredited off-campus options for when res is full. On-campus spots go fast, so apply early if you want a place. Private accommodation is an option, but you’ll need to handle your own lease and payments. The campus feels safe and has all the basics like study areas, laundry, and chill spaces, but always keep your stuff locked up.
