What You Need to Know About Tshwane University of Technology
TUT sits in Pretoria and is one of SA's biggest universities of technology. It's known for hands-on, practical courses that focus on getting you work experience while you study. If you're looking for a route into careers in engineering, applied sciences, business, or hospitality, TUT's diplomas and advanced diplomas can get you there without crazy high entry requirements.
TUT is a solid option if your marks are in the mid-20s APS range. It's not impossible to get in, but you should check the exact requirements for your course. The campus vibe is practical, with a lot of people coming from different provinces to study technical and business-related fields.
What APS Do You Need?
Most TUT diplomas need at least 19-25 APS, depending on the course. For example, Animal Sciences starts at 19 APS but Geology needs 21 APS and Retail Business Management wants 24 APS. Some programs, especially in engineering or sciences, need Maths or Physical Science at a set level. If you have Maths Lit, you can get into some programs, but it might block you from engineering or science diplomas that require core Maths.
Always check if your program wants specific subjects at certain levels. For many diplomas, you need at least level 4 in English and level 3 or 4 in Maths or Maths Lit. Life Orientation doesn't count towards your APS. If you’re applying for advanced diplomas, you need a related diploma or equivalent qualification.
How to Apply
I know online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step and you'll get through. Apply at https://applications-prod.tut.ac.za/ or for online programs, head to https://online.tut.ac.za/. You need to pay a R240 application fee. Have your ID, results, and supporting docs ready. Don’t forget, you’ll also pay a R730 extracurricular fee when you register.
Application deadlines depend on the course, but the main ones are 15 June, 31 July, and 30 September. Check your program’s info for the exact date. Some courses fill up fast, so apply early if you can. No walk-ins are allowed, everything is digital.
Fees and Funding
TUT is on the more affordable side compared to some varsities, but costs still add up. For example, the total tuition for the online Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management is about R50,230. You pay per module, so you don’t fork out everything at once. There’s also a R730 extracurricular fee every year. Other sundry costs like lab fees or certificate replacements are listed in the official fees booklet.
NSFAS covers TUT, so if your family income is under R350,000 a year, apply on the NSFAS site. Remember, keep your NSFAS reference number safe. TUT doesn’t make funding decisions, so you have to handle that with NSFAS yourself. If you need help, the Financial Aid Office is there or use the NSFAS WhatsApp line.
Life on Campus
TUT’s campuses are spread out, and you’ll find plenty of societies and practical facilities, especially for science and engineering. Accommodation info isn't detailed here, but res is usually limited and you need to apply early. There are campus safety measures and student support, but always keep an eye on your belongings, especially during load shedding. Transport options include Gautrain, taxis, and buses, since TUT is in Pretoria.
