Capricorn courses: common questions

What courses does Capricorn offer?

Capricorn offers three main types of course: NC(V) programmes (National Certificate Vocational, NQF 2 to 4), NATED programmes (Report 191, N1 to N6 in engineering and business), and occupational trade qualifications like electrician, plumber and boilermaker. Fields include engineering, IT, business, hospitality and office administration.

Which Capricorn courses does NSFAS fund?

NSFAS funds all NC(V) and NATED (Report 191) programmes at Capricorn, because it is a public TVET college. If your combined household income is R350 000 or less, NSFAS covers your tuition plus allowances. You apply for NSFAS separately at www.nsfas.org.za.

Can I study at Capricorn without matric?

Yes. Many courses at Capricorn start below matric. NC(V) usually needs Grade 9, and NATED N1 needs Grade 9 with the right subjects. You do not need a matric certificate to start. NATED N4 and up do need matric or an equivalent.

What APS score do I need for Capricorn?

TVET colleges do not use the university APS score. Capricorn looks at your school grade and subjects instead. NC(V) usually needs Grade 9 or higher, and NATED depends on the level. Always check the entry rule for the exact course you want.

How long are courses at Capricorn?

NC(V) programmes take three years, one year each at Levels 2, 3 and 4. NATED programmes run in trimesters or semesters, so N1 to N3 can take about 18 months and N4 to N6 another 18 months, plus workplace time. Trade qualifications vary by trade.
