A software developer writes the code behind apps, websites, and computer systems. In South Africa, this is one of the few good careers where you do not need a degree. You can study a BSc in Computer Science or IT at university, do a shorter diploma, join a coding bootcamp (some are free), or teach yourself and build a portfolio. What matters most to employers is your skills and the projects you can show. It pays well, and you can often work from home or for companies overseas.

What does a software developer do?

Software developers build and fix the apps, websites, and systems people use. In a day, you might write code, test it, fix bugs, work with a team, and plan new features. You use a computer and the internet, and you solve problems step by step. Much of the work can be done from home, and many developers work for companies in other countries.
