The best way is first. If your marks are not enough for one way, try the next one down.

BSc Computer Science, IT, or Cybersecurity

A few universities offer dedicated cybersecurity or information security degrees. Most people study Computer Science or IT and specialise from there. You can work across cybersecurity roles, from analyst to engineer.

Diploma in IT or Network Security

To get in: About 24 APS or more. English, Maths or Maths Literacy. More practical, and lower marks than the degree.

Certifications (CompTIA, CEH, and more)

To get in: No degree needed, though basic IT knowledge helps. The most common way into cybersecurity. Certifications often matter more than a degree.

You study for industry certifications like CompTIA Security+ (entry level), then CySA+, CEH (ethical hacking), and later CISSP. You can study these at colleges, online, or on your own. You get a job as a security or SOC analyst, based on your certifications and skills.

No degree? Start with an entry certification like CompTIA Security+ or the free Google Cybersecurity Certificate, build skills, and apply for junior roles.

If you don’t get in yet

No degree, or marks too low for a Computer Science degree? Cybersecurity is one of the best careers for getting in on skills and certifications.

Start with an entry certification

Get CompTIA Security+ or the free Google Cybersecurity Certificate. These show employers you know the basics, no degree needed.

Do a cybersecurity learnership

The MICT SETA and some companies run cybersecurity learnerships where you earn a stipend while you learn.

Teach yourself and practise

Use free courses and online labs and 'capture the flag' games to build real skills, then apply for junior roles.
