What You Need to Know About University of Limpopo
UL sits in Polokwane and is known for making higher education possible for a lot of first-generation varsity students. It’s a solid choice if you want a real degree without the pressure of super high APS cutoffs. UL is especially good for teaching, law, and business, and it has a big focus on serving its local communities. If you want a place that gets the struggles of rural or township life, this is it.
You’ll find people from all over Limpopo and even the rest of SA here. The vibe is friendly, but you’ll need to work for your degree. UL is not going to hand you a qualification just because you show up.
What APS Do You Need?
For most degrees at University of Limpopo you need between 26 APS and 30 APS. For example, the Bachelor of Accountancy wants 30 APS with at least 50% in Maths. The LLB (Law) degree also needs 30 APS. If you just miss the mark, some courses have an extended program that takes you in at 26 APS. Make sure you have the right subjects—Maths is non-negotiable for most business degrees, and you’ll usually need English Home Language at 50% or higher.
Life Orientation doesn’t count in your APS calculation. Only your top six subjects count, so don’t bank on LO to boost you over the line. If you did NC(V), you need three fundamentals at 60% (including LO) and four relevant vocational subjects. Each faculty has its own subject rules, so double-check if you’re set for your dream course.
Fees and Funding
UL’s exact tuition fees for 2027 aren’t public yet, so check their website for updates. The good news is that NSFAS covers most degrees here, including tuition, res, and some study materials if you qualify. The Limpopo Department of Education and other funders also offer bursaries. It’s safer to apply for NSFAS while you wait for your UL offer letter, so you don’t miss out on funding.
Life on Campus
UL has on-campus and off-campus res options. If you want a spot in res, apply as early as possible. Campus life is what you make of it—there are sports, societies, and support for new students, but you’ll need to actually join in. Transport can be a mission if you stay off-campus, so plan your route and budget for taxis if needed.
