What You Need to Know About Rhodes University
Rhodes sits in Makhanda and is known for its small classes and tight community feel. If you want a campus where people actually know your name, this is the place. Rhodes is especially respected for journalism, science, pharmacy, and arts. Getting in isn’t impossible, but you need solid marks, especially for the more competitive programs.
The campus is in the Eastern Cape, so you get a classic student-town vibe. If you’re into hands-on learning and want lecturers who actually care if you show up, Rhodes is honest about that experience.
What APS Do You Need?
Most degrees at Rhodes want a solid APS. If you’re aiming for a safe bet, you need at least 40 APS for a firm offer, but some degrees will consider you with 37-39 APS, depending on space. For Science and Pharmacy, you need specific subjects like Maths and Physical Science, and you can’t use Maths Lit for these degrees. You also need at least 50% for English and four subjects from the recommended list, all at level 4 (50%-59%) or higher.
Just hitting the minimum doesn’t guarantee a place, especially for hot programs like Journalism and Pharmacy. Make sure you check the exact subject requirements for your degree.
How to Apply
I know applying can be stressful, but just take each step one at a time. Apply online at https://ross.ru.ac.za/ugadmissions. You’ll pay an application fee of R100. Have your ID, latest results, and any other required documents scanned and ready. If you’ve already finished matric, include a certified copy of your certificate.
You can also download a paper form if internet is an issue, but online is the fastest. Check the official Rhodes page for the final deadline, because it can change depending on the program.
Fees and Funding
Varsity fees can be hectic, so always check what you’re signing up for. The exact costs for 2027 aren’t out yet, but you can find the latest info on the Rhodes fees page. If you need help, apply for NSFAS as soon as possible. Most Rhodes students who need it qualify for NSFAS, which covers tuition, res, and sometimes a bit extra for books.
You can also look for other bursaries and scholarships. The Rhodes financial aid office is there to help if you’re stuck.
Life on Campus
Rhodes is famous for its res system. Most first-years get a spot in res, which makes making friends easy. Res fees depend on your choices, so check the official page for the full list. The campus has student societies, sports, and support services like a counselling centre and health care. Safety is taken seriously, and most places in town are walkable from campus.
