What You Need to Know About University of the Witwatersrand
Wits is one of the most well-known universities in South Africa, sitting right in the centre of Johannesburg. If you want a place that’s tough to get into and has a big city vibe, this is it. People come here for top programs in business, health sciences, engineering, and the arts. Getting a spot is competitive, especially for courses like Accounting Science and Computer Science.
You’ll find Wits is strict about its requirements, but if you’ve got strong marks and the right subjects, it’s worth it. The campus is busy, and you’ll meet folks from all over the country. If you’re serious about your studies and want to challenge yourself, Wits pushes you hard.
What APS Do You Need?
For most BCom degrees, you need at least 38 APS with Level 5 for both English and Maths. If you’re aiming for Accounting Science or Computer Science, it jumps to 44+ APS, and you need Level 6 Maths for Computer Science. Humanities degrees usually start from 36+ APS with Level 5 English. Teaching degrees need 37+ APS and good marks in English and Maths or Maths Lit, but the science and health programs want pure Maths, not Maths Lit. Medicine doesn’t just look at your APS. You need Level 5 in English, Maths, and Life Sciences or Physical Sciences, plus you have to write the NBTs and get job shadowing hours sorted.
How to Apply
I know the online application site can be intimidating, but if you take it step-by-step, you’ll be fine. Apply at https://www.wits.ac.za/applications/ using the online system. The main things you need are your final Grade 11 or most recent matric results, your ID, and any extra documents they ask for. The deadline for applications is 30 September 2025, and if you want res, apply by the same date.
There’s no mention of walk-in applications, so get everything in online. Make sure your documents are clear and you choose your programs in order of preference. If the site is acting up, try late at night or early in the morning when it’s quieter.
Fees and Funding
Wits doesn’t list exact fees for 2027 yet, but you can find the latest info on their fees page. Some programs cost more if they have labs or extra materials. NSFAS covers Wits, and you can also look out for things like the Vice-Chancellor’s Prestige Scholarship, First Time Entrance Scholarships, and Council Merit Scholarships, all given automatically if you qualify. If you’re stuck, the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office can help you find more bursaries.
Life on Campus
Res life at Wits is a big deal, with different options for every budget. Self-catering res starts from R55,000 per year for a single room, and catered res is from R67,554 for singles (excluding meals). Wits Junction is a bit more luxury, starting from R87,912. You get 24/7 security, free campus WiFi, laundry, study rooms, and even a bus service. There’s support for disabled students, crisis lines, and plenty of lounges to chill in between classes.
