What You Need to Know About University of Kwazulu Natal
UKZN is one of the bigger universities in KwaZulu-Natal, with campuses in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It’s a proper choice if you’re into science, engineering, teaching, or business. UKZN is pretty well-known for its mix of academic support options and real-world career paths.
You’ll find it’s not impossible to get in if your marks are mid-range, but some courses are strict. A lot of people pick UKZN because it’s got a reputation for being practical rather than flashy. The online application process is zero-rated, which means you won’t use any data if you access it on the official site.
What APS Do You Need?
APS requirements at UKZN depend on what you want to study. Most BCom and BSc programs want at least 32-36 APS, and you often need Maths 5 (60%) or higher. Programs in teaching and social sciences might accept 28 APS, but you’ll still need decent English and Life Orientation marks, usually at Level 4. Maths Lit is sometimes okay for teaching, but for science, engineering, and business, pure Maths is a must. Always check if your subjects match what the course needs, not just the APS score.
How to Apply
I know the online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step. Apply online at https://applications.ukzn.ac.za/. You don’t have to pay an acceptance of offer fee anymore—just apply, and then confirm if you get in. Make sure you have your certified ID, latest results, and proof of payment for the application fee if they ask.
The main application deadline varies by program, but most close by late January or early February. Always double-check your course deadline and upload your docs before the cutoff. If you want to change your mind after applying, there’s a separate Change of Mind process for some courses.
Fees and Funding
Studying at UKZN isn’t cheap, but it’s not the most expensive either. For 2026, you’re looking at a tuition deposit of R7,300 before registration. If you’re staying in res, that’s another R6,800. You can apply for NSFAS if your family income is under the limit, or look at UKZN’s own bursaries and scholarships. Check out the student funding page for all the options, including loans and merit awards.
Life on Campus
UKZN has res options at most campuses, but space is tight, so apply early. Res costs are around R6,800 for the deposit, and you’ll need extra for meals and books. There’s decent support for first-years, plus help with funding and academic skills. Some campuses are close to taxi routes and have student societies for different interests.
