What You Need to Know About Stellenbosch University
Stellenbosch is one of the top universities in South Africa, sitting in the heart of the Western Cape winelands. People call it 'Maties' and it’s known for high academic standards and being tough to get into. If you want a spot here, you need marks that stand out, especially for popular degrees like BCom or Law. It’s not just about books though—there’s a solid culture around sports, research, and student life.
Stellenbosch ranks among the top 300 universities in the world according to TIME Magazine. That tells you it’s serious about research and innovation. If you’re aiming for a place that opens doors locally and globally, this is a solid pick.
What APS Do You Need?
Getting into Stellenbosch isn’t just about your overall APS. You need certain subjects with specific marks. For the BCom (Economic Sciences), you must have an NSC aggregate of at least 65% (excluding Life Orientation) and 60% for Maths. Some programs, like the BSc in Forestry, want at least 60% aggregate and 50% for English or Afrikaans. For the BCom Management Sciences Extended Program, you need at least 55% aggregate and 50% for Maths or 60% for Maths Lit. If you want to do Law or anything with Actuarial Science, expect higher requirements—sometimes 70% for Maths! Maths Lit is accepted for a few courses, but it can lock you out of most BCom and Science degrees.
How to Apply
I know the online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step and you’ll get through. You apply online at student.sun.ac.za. Have your ID, Grade 11 and Grade 12 marks, and certified documents ready to upload. Don’t stress if the site is slow, just keep trying.
Early bird applications close on 8 December 2025 and the final deadline is 21 January 2026. Registration wraps up by 5 February 2026. No walk-ins—everything happens online. Once you’re in, final offers depend on your final Grade 12 marks.
Fees and Funding
Varsity is expensive here. Fees change by program and credits, but you can check all the details in the student fees PDF. For example, Engineering can cost over R43,601 for the first year. NSFAS funding is available if you meet the requirements, and bursary applications run from 1 October to 30 November 2025. If you get SASSA grants, you automatically qualify for NSFAS financial eligibility. Always double-check if you need to reapply each year.
Life on Campus
Stellenbosch has a unique campus vibe with lots of societies, sports, and support services. Accommodation is available in res and private digs, but spots fill up fast—apply early. There’s support for everything from academic stress to disability access. You’ll find good public transport and a small-town feel, but watch out for load shedding and high living costs.
