What You Need to Know About Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University
If you’re serious about a career in health, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is one of the top choices in Gauteng. The campus is in Pretoria and it’s known for training doctors, pharmacists, and other health workers. Getting in isn’t easy, since most courses have high APS requirements and limited spots. SMU is all about health sciences, so if you want to study something outside of medicine or pharmacy, this isn’t your place.
The university is competitive. For medicine, there are only about 50 spaces available for the extended program, so you need the right marks and subjects. Most programs fill up quickly because everyone wants a shot at health careers. If you’re from a Quintile 1 or 2 school and didn’t get into main medicine, there’s an extended program you can try for.
What APS Do You Need?
To get into most courses, you need at least 32 APS. For medicine (MBChB) and the Diploma in Emergency Medical Care, 32 APS is the minimum. You need strong marks in Maths, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and English. Maths Lit usually won’t cut it for these health courses, so stick with Maths if you can. If you’re missing the minimum points or key subjects, you probably won’t make the shortlist.
How to Apply
I know the online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step. Apply at https://www.smu.ac.za/students/apply/online-application/ and make sure you pay the R300 non-refundable application fee. You’ll need your ID, certified copies of your results, and proof of payment. Use your ID number as the payment reference, or your application might get stuck.
Don’t wait for the last minute, because spots fill up fast and missing documents can trip you up. Only online applications are accepted, so make sure your internet connection is stable or use the library or a friend’s WiFi if you need to.
Fees and Funding
Fees for 2027 aren’t out yet, but for 2024, some courses were around R75,500 a year. You have to pay an initial registration fee of R4,500 if you’re self-funded. SMU accepts NSFAS, so if you qualify, apply early at www.nsfas.org.za to get your funding sorted. There are also some bursaries and scholarships—ask the financial aid office or check their site for details. No one wants to stress over fees once classes start.
Life on Campus
If you want to stay in res, check the official SMU page for details about costs and spaces. Accommodation is in demand, so apply early if you need a place. Campus life is focused on health sciences, so you’ll meet people serious about similar careers. There’s public transport access and the usual student support services, but info on societies and activities is pretty limited.
Not sure if your marks are enough? Use our free APS calculator to check where you stand before you apply.
