What You Need to Know About University of Pretoria
UP is one of the biggest universities in Gauteng and has a strong reputation for academics. It's well known for its large campus life, lots of clubs, and variety of degrees. If you want a university where you can get involved and meet people from all over SA, this is a good pick. UP is competitive, especially for health and design courses, so you need decent marks to get in.
The main campus is in Pretoria, close to taxis, buses, and the Gautrain, so it's easy to get around. UP is not the easiest place to get into for popular courses, but it's also not limited to only top achievers. It's a solid choice if you're looking for a balance of academic options and student life.
What APS Do You Need?
For most programmes, you need at least 28 APS for final admission, but some courses want more. For example, a Bachelor of Arts or Social Work needs 30 APS from your Grade 11 marks to get a provisional offer, but you must finish matric with at least 28 APS. Design and health courses often need 32+ APS and specific subjects. Medicine is tough—you need about 35 APS and high marks in Maths, Physical Sciences, and English. Maths Lit usually blocks you from Science, Commerce, and Health degrees, so check the subject requirements before you apply.
How to Apply
I know the online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step. You apply at www.up.ac.za/apply. Applications open in March the year before you want to start. There’s no extra form for res, just indicate it on your main application. You’ll need your Grade 11 report, ID, and any other documents the program asks for. Some design courses also want a portfolio, so check the course details.
The popular courses fill up fast, so apply as soon as you can. There’s no set closing date for most courses, but health sciences usually close by 30 June. Rather get your application in early to have a shot at both your degree and res.
Fees and Funding
UP doesn’t list fixed fees in the data here, so you’ll need to see their fees page for the latest costs. Fees do go up every year, and they’re not cheap. If you need help paying, apply for NSFAS at nsfas.org.za. UP also has its own bursaries and loans—you apply for those via the UP Student Portal. You can even apply for funding to help with historical debt or top up your bursary if you’re short.
Life on Campus
Getting into res at UP is tough since demand is high. Only full-time undergrads under 24 years old can apply. You just tick the box on your application—no extra forms. Placement is based on your marks and how early you apply, so don’t wait. There’s also private accredited accommodation nearby if res is full. Res rooms have Wi-Fi, and you buy meals from vendors. There are support staff and a helpline for emergencies. If you get placed in res, you’ll need to pay a levy to secure your spot.
