What You Need to Know About Sol Plaatje University
Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is right in the heart of Kimberley, Northern Cape, and it’s one of the youngest universities in South Africa. If you want a campus that’s still growing and making its mark, SPU is the place. It’s especially known for making higher education more accessible for students from the Northern Cape and surrounding areas.
SPU isn’t impossible to get into, but you do need to hit the right APS. Some courses want higher marks, so don’t chill if you’re aiming for teaching or humanities. SPU is big on social justice, local impact, and helping you actually finish your degree, not just start it.
What APS Do You Need?
Most programs at SPU start from 25 APS, but you’ll need 30 APS or more for degrees like Bachelor of Arts or Education. Some programs require specific marks for English or other languages, and if you’re choosing Maths-heavy subjects, you need strong Maths marks. Maths Lit is accepted for some diplomas and certificates, but if you want to do teaching in Maths or Sciences, you’ll need Core Maths at a decent level.
For the Bachelor of Education, you must have 30 APS with at least Level 4 for English. Maths or Science electives need Level 4 in those subjects. If you want to study humanities, you’ll need 30 APS and solid language marks too. Always check the subject requirements for your specific program if you’re not sure.
How to Apply
I know the online portals can be a nightmare, but take it step-by-step and you’ll be fine. Apply at https://www.spu.ac.za/ and look for the application form. You’ll need your NSC results, a certified ID copy, and proof of payment for the application fee. The application fee is R100 and you need to pay it before your form gets processed.
Applications usually open in April and close around 30 September for the next year’s intake. There are no walk-in or late applications, so make sure you get your stuff in on time. Double-check your docs before you hit submit.
Fees and Funding
SPU keeps fees as affordable as possible, but varsity is never cheap. The application fee is R100, but tuition and res fees change every year, so check the official Sol Plaatje University page for exact details. NSFAS covers SPU if you qualify, and there are also bursaries and scholarships listed on their site.
If you’re stressing about money, it’s safer to apply for funding and bursaries early. The financial aid office can help if you get stuck or need advice on payment plans.
Life on Campus
SPU is split across a few campuses in Kimberley, so you won’t have to deal with long travel between classes. There’s res available, but space is limited, so apply for accommodation early. The Division of Student Affairs runs support for academics, wellness, and even social relief if you need help with food or basics.
You’ll find sports, societies, and a strong student community, especially if you want to get involved in campus life. Security and student support are a big deal at SPU, so you’ll feel looked after.
