What You Need to Know About Central University of Technology
CUT is the main university of technology in the Free State, with campuses in Bloemfontein and Welkom. If you're into engineering, science, or want to become a teacher, this place has solid options. It's not the hardest varsity to get into, but you still need good marks in the right subjects.
It's especially popular for practical courses that lead straight to jobs, whether that's in IT, teaching, or the sciences. If you like hands-on learning, CUT is all about work experience as part of your degree.
What APS Do You Need?
Most programs at CUT want at least 27 APS or higher, but each course has its own subject requirements. For example, teaching programs might need 50% for Maths or specific marks in subjects like English, Accounting, or Physical Science. Maths Lit can block you from certain degrees, especially in engineering and science. Life Orientation only counts for 1 point on the APS scale here, so don't rely on it to boost your score.
Always check what subjects your course needs. For teaching courses, being strong in your chosen subject is a must. If you want to teach Computer Science, you need 50% for Maths and a pass in IT is recommended. Language teaching asks for 50% in English plus another language.
How to Apply
I know online applications can get confusing, but just take it slow and follow each step. Apply online at https://www.cut.ac.za/, there are no printed forms or walk-ins. Get your documents ready, like your ID, latest results, and proof of address. You’ll need to upload your marks, either from the Department of Basic Education or by entering them manually if you're still in matric.
The application is free. Make sure you keep track of your student number and PIN after you register. Deadlines can change, so check their website for the latest closing date.
Fees and Funding
Fees at CUT depend on your course, but you can expect to pay things like a R230 application fee, R927 enrolment fee, and minimum R5,238 tuition depending on your subjects. Some modules cost around R4,550 each. If you need help, you can apply for NSFAS, and there are bursary offices on both campuses to help with your questions.
Varsity fees are real, and if your family makes under a certain amount, you might get help with fee adjustments or NSFAS. Always ask about bursaries or loans if you’re worried about costs.
Life on Campus
CUT has res options at both Bloemfontein and Welkom. You pay things like a R2,376 minimum residence fee, plus deposits for breakages and keys. There’s a Student Services team to help with accommodation, NSFAS, and academic support.
Campus life is practical—think labs, workshops, and real-world projects. If you don’t get placed in res, start looking for digs early, especially in Bloem.
